Race facts

“The name Indianapolis has a long tradition, and when you are there, you understand this myth so much more. A delicate touch is required when driving an aerodynamic racing car on an oval.”

Christopher Haase

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indy 500. The race, which has been held since 1911, is considered the oldest and most famous car race in the world. With well over 400,000 spectators on site, it is also the largest annual one-day sports event worldwide.

In 1909, the circuit was covered with three million bricks, which earned it the name: the “Brickyard”. Between 1936 and 1961, the course was gradually paved. Today, the one-yard (almost one metre) wide brick strip along the start-finish line is a testimony to the past.
